Ankle Fracture

About

Ankle fractures are common and involve breaks in the bones around the ankle joint. Depending on what specific bones are broken and the alignment of these bones, these fracture can be treated non-surgically with a cast or brace, or may require surgery to realign and stabilize the fracture.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Pain.
  • Swelling and bruising.
  • Inability to move the shoulder.
  • A grinding sensation.

Treatment Options

Most ankle fractures can be treated without surgery. Surgery is necessary when there is a compound fracture that has broken through the skin or the bone is severely out of place. Surgery typically involves fixing the fracture with plates and screws or rods inside the bone.
